Klipspringer Scientific Name: Oreotragus oreotragus
What is a Klipspringer? A Klipspringer is a small antelope that is found in the mountainous areas of South Africa. We conduct all of our Klipspringer hunting on our main hunting area in Limpopo Province.
Full grown Klipspringer stand about two feet tall at the shoulder and weigh around 30-40 pounds. Their coats are a yellowish color with gray sprinkles, which blends in well with their rocky habitat.
Male Klipspringer are territorial and they are quite often found in the same places over and over again. Their diet is variable and consists of a wide variety of grass, shrubs, and fruits. They will drink water when it is available, but they can go for long periods without drinking if water is scarce.
Klipspringer have excellent eyesight, which is their main form of defense from predators. They are also extremely agile animals and are adept at quickly moving around their rocky habitat to escape from would be predators.
How do you distinguish males from females when Klipspringer hunting? Fortunately, it is relatively easy to distinguish between males and females when Klipspringer hunting. Only males have horns.
What is the best rifle caliber for Klipspringer hunting? Because Klipspringer are very small, dainty animals, their hides are easily ruined by high powered bullets. Klipspringer are even more fragile than either Steenbok or Duiker. Ideally, hunters would use small caliber cartridges like the .223 Remington or .22 Hornet, with non-expanding bullets, when Klipspringer hunting. However, perhaps the best cartridge for hunting Klipspringer is the .375 H&H loaded with solids. This will reliably anchor the animal and cause surprisingly little damage to the trophy.
When Klipspringer hunting, place your trophy on ice as soon as possible after the shot. Klipspringer are very vulnerable to hair slip and should be handled with care in order to properly preserve your trophy.
What is the best recommended Klipspringer shot placement? When Klipspringer hunting, I recommend aiming for the heart and lungs, while trying to avoid the shoulder blade at all costs. If done correctly, this will minimize damage to the trophy while still providing a quick and ethical shot. When the animal is standing broadside, aim just behind his shoulder, about one third of the way up the body.
Adjust your aiming point accordingly if the Klipspringer is quartering towards or away from you (aim slightly forward if the Klipspringer is quartering towards you and slightly to the rear if it is quartering away).
Trophy Care While Klipspringer Hunting Klipspringer have very beautiful and unique coats. Their hairs are hollow to aid them in regulating their temperature. Believe it or not, Klipspringer hair is one of the best materials around for making dry fly fishing lures (because they are hollow, they float easily on water).
However, the fact that their hairs are hollow makes Klipspringer coats extremely vulnerable to hair slip. Because of this, it is incredibly important to take good care of your Klipspringer trophy after the hunt. Do not worry about skinning or field dressing it. Place your Klipspringer trophy on ice or in a freezer immediately after the hunt and get it to a taxidermist as soon as possible.
What is the average shot distance when Klipspringer hunting in South Africa? The average shot distance when Klipspringer hunting varies, but 100-150 yards is the most common.
What methods do you use when Klipspringer hunting? One of the more successful Klipspringer hunting methods is to take up a vantage point among the rocky koppies that Klipspringer call home and call them in with a whistle. They are curious animals and will often come in to investigate the sound and hopefully present a good shot opportunity. They may also be encountered and ambushed occasionally at water holes.
What is the best time of year for Klipspringer hunting in South Africa? Klipspringer are another species that may be successfully hunted virtually all year round. However, the months of March through September are typically the best months for Klipspringer hunting in South Africa.
